Fighting Hunger by Honoring Western New York’s Agricultural Legacy
Western New York is a region rooted in rich, fertile soil and an even richer agricultural history. For this reason, we must honor that legacy by harnessing the ample natural resources in our backyards for the War on Hunger.
For generations, farms in our communities have not only fed our families, but also fueled our economy and nourished our communities. From sprawling dairy farms and orchards to fields of corn and wheat, agriculture has always been the backbone of life in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties.
This history is more than just our past. It’s our identity. It’s a testament to the strength, resilience and ingenuity of the people who call this region home. Today, in the face of rising food insecurity and inflation, it’s time to draw upon that heritage to address one of the greatest challenges of our time: ensuring every neighbor has access to fresh, nutritious food.
Our Agricultural Roots: A Source of Pride & Power in the Fight Against Hunger
From the early settlers who cleared land for family farms to the modern farmers using innovative techniques to increase yields sustainably, Western New York’s agricultural prowess has long been a point of pride. This legacy isn’t just about producing food — it’s about feeding communities, building relationships, and fostering a culture of care and cooperation.
Today, the Olean Food Pantry honors that legacy by collaborating with regional farms to provide fresh, locally grown produce to families in need. Our partnerships with farmers allow us to deliver healthy, seasonal options that nourish bodies and souls alike. These partnerships also strengthen our local food system, ensuring vital resources stay within the communities we call home.
A Growing Problem: Inflation & Food Insecurity
Despite our agricultural abundance, many in our community struggle to afford healthy food. A rapidly growing community need caused an increase of more than 100% in pantry visitors since 2020. (That’s more than doubled!) Rising inflation has driven up grocery prices, leaving countless families forced to make impossible choices between food, utilities and other basic needs.

In Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, this problem has reached critical levels. The cost of fresh fruits, vegetables and other essentials has outpaced wages, leaving many without access to the nutrition they need to thrive. This is where we, as a community, CAN and MUST step in.
Community Gardens: A Local Solution to a Local Problem
One way to honor our agricultural legacy in Western New York is by empowering more people to establish community gardens. These gardens are more than just plots of land — they’re opportunities to grow food, foster community and teach valuable skills.
Imagine a neighborhood coming together to plant, tend and harvest a garden. Each person contributes their time and talent, and everyone reaps the rewards: fresh produce, a sense of accomplishment and stronger community bonds. Community gardens can supplement what local food pantries provide, offering another layer of support for those facing food insecurity.
At Olean Food Pantry, we’re exploring ways to encourage and support the establishment of community gardens. By sharing our knowledge, providing seeds and supplies, and connecting aspiring gardeners with local experts, we can help grow a network of gardens across our region.
How’s that for a solution to hunger? Community gardens BY local people FOR local people.
