Among our numerous community partnerships, we hold a special place in our hearts for local farms and nonprofit farming organizations that help us provide healthy food items.

We believe that providing nutritious food is not just about meeting immediate needs, but about fostering a healthier, more vibrant community. Here in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, obesity rates are among the highest in New York State, according to the NYS Department of Health:

• Cattaraugus County: 43.1%
• Chautauqua County: 35.6%

Of course, this is mostly due to the prevalence of fatty, processed foods in most Americans’ diets. Here at Olean Food Pantry, we pride ourselves on prioritizing only healthy food options to help break the vicious cycle of poor health and generational poverty. This mission is powerfully supported by our longstanding partnerships with local nonprofit organizations like Canticle Farm and numerous local farmers.

Canticle Farm: A Model of Community Agriculture

Canticle Farm, a nonprofit community-supported agriculture (CSA) farm, has been a vital partner to OFP for many years. Canticle Farm’s mission aligns closely with our own, focusing on providing sustainably grown, chemical-free produce to the community. Their dedication to organic farming practices ensures the food we distribute is not only nutritious, but also free from harmful pesticides and chemicals.

Our Canticle Farm partnership allows us to offer a diverse range of fresh vegetables and fruits to individuals and families in need. This is particularly important as many of those we serve have limited access to fresh produce. By incorporating Canticle Farm’s bounty into distribution days – which are today routinely serving record numbers of individuals and families – we can fight food insecurity while also encouraging healthier eating habits.

OFP collaborates with numerous local farmers who selflessly give toward a shared vision of a healthier community. We would go so far as to call them local Hunger Heroes! These farmers provide us with fresh, locally-grown produce, dairy, eggs, meat and more. 

Our relationships with local farmers are built on mutual respect and the pursuit of sustainable agriculture. By sourcing food locally, we can ensure that our clients receive the freshest possible products, packed with essential nutrients that are often lacking in people’s diets.

As a pleasant side effect, relying on local farmers also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting food over long distances.

Access to fresh, local food has a profound impact on the health and well-being of our clients. You don’t need to consult the myriad scientific studies out there to know diets rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and obesity. 

For many of our clients, the fresh produce we provide through our farm partnerships is a crucial component of a healthier diet. Many individuals and families have difficulty affording healthy groceries, instead turning to processed foods that unfortunately are often cheaper in stores.

Our partnerships also help to educate Olean Food Pantry clients about the importance of nutrition and sustainable eating practices. Our volunteer “shoppers” regularly guide pantry users toward healthier food choices. They often provide healthy cooking recipes, too!
