Every month at Olean Food Pantry, something remarkable happens. While hunger and poverty continue to be some of Western New York’s most pressing issues, roughly 2,000 individuals and families receive free food and household supplies they wouldn’t be able to get otherwise. How does this happen? By the generosity and devotion of volunteers, of course!

In recent years, record numbers have shown up to our doors for a little relief, a little hope and the basic human right of access to healthy food. Behind every can on a shelf, every friendly greeting at check-in, and every carefully prepared food box, there’s a quiet army of dedicated volunteers making it all happen.

This blog post is not just a thank you. It’s a heartfelt ode to the people who give their time, their strength and their hearts to keep Olean Food Pantry moving forward. Without them, the harsh reality is that the hunger crisis in Olean, NY and surrounding communities would spiral out of control.

Volunteers: The Beating Heart of Olean Food Pantry

We pride ourselves on volunteerism. It’s in the very first sentence of our mission statement.  When people imagine hunger relief, they often think of food — trucks full of groceries, boxes stacked high with donations. But the real story starts with people. Dozens of them. All volunteers giving their time, effort and expertise toward a common goal.

From our Board of Directors who steer the vision and ensure our long-term sustainability, to the warm and welcoming faces who greet clients at the door, every person plays a vital role in transforming food insecurity into hope.

These volunteers are retired teachers, busy parents, local business owners and other lifelong neighbors. They all share the belief that NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY in our communities here in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties.

Shopper’s Choice Volunteers: Dignity in Every Interaction

Olean Food Pantry is proud to operate a Shopper’s Choice model, in which clients select the items that best fit their dietary needs, health goals and cultural preferences. This model brings dignity and self-determination to the food distribution process — and it wouldn’t be possible without our Shopper’s Choice assistants.

These volunteers don’t just guide clients through our shelves. They listen. They encourage. They care. Whether it’s helping someone pick out low-sodium options, explaining how to prepare a new ingredient or providing healthy recipes, their goal is not just to give food but to help people feel seen, respected and supported.

While prepackaged boxes of food are available, most Olean Food Pantry visitors prefer to select the food items they believe best suits theirs and their families’ needs.

Stockers & Organizers: The Unsung Heroes of our Local Food Pantry

Before the doors open to a single client, there’s a flurry of behind-the-scenes activity. Volunteers arrive early to unload deliveries, stock shelves, sort donations and organize inventory with the kind of care you’d expect in any professional grocery store.

These volunteers are meticulous. They rotate stock to reduce food waste, check expiration and best-by dates, and make sure everything is welcoming and easily accessible. They ensure we’re ready to serve each family with efficiency, consistency and pride. 

Our volunteers also respond quickly when demand spikes, when lines of cars stretch around our parking lot at 8 Leo Moss Drive full of neighbors waiting for an appropriate allotment of free monthly groceries. You’ll often find stockers stepping in wherever needed, proving that teamwork really is the secret ingredient.

Garden Volunteers: Cultivating Freshness & Community

Some of our volunteers are blessed with a green thumb. What better way to serve than to use their talents for growing and nurturing?

Just beyond our pantry walls is a thriving source of nutrition: the Olean Food Pantry Community Garden and greenhouse. Tended by our volunteers, these spaces produced more than a ton of fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices every year.

Garden volunteers take great pride in being planters, weeders, harvesters and caretakers who honor WNY’s great agricultural history and legacy. They’re also teachers and stewards of environmental sustainability who educate others about growing food and remind us of the healing power of Mother Earth. 

Rain or shine, you’ll find these great people working with purpose and joy to nourish bodies, minds and spirits.

Check-In Teams: The First Friendly Face

For many food pantry clients, pantry day can bring a mix of emotions: relief, anxiety, maybe even shame. It’s tough seeking help, especially for some who experience the unfortunate stigma of food insecurity and mental health. That’s why our check-in volunteers are so essential. 

These are the folks who smile, who learn names, who take a moment to chat, and who make people feel welcomed and respected from the moment they arrive. Above all, they offer something harder to measure: compassion.

They juggle paperwork, confirm eligibility and keep the process running smoothly, especially on busy days when hundreds of clients come through. 

Board of Directors: The Backbone of Our Mission

Our Board members work tirelessly to guide the long-term vision of Olean Food Pantry. Most of them work behind the scenes. They’re also not afraid to roll up their sleeves and volunteer on distribution days themselves. But in their vital administrative role, they oversee strategic planning, fundraising, operations and sustainability efforts — including our ambitious $1 Million Fundraising Campaign to ensure 10 years of stocked shelves and sustainable service.

Board members are ambassadors for our mission. They help to secure grants, build partnerships and remain accountable to the communities we serve. Their leadership allows volunteers on the ground to do what they do best: deliver hands-on service with integrity and care.

Every box packed, every shelf stocked, and every bushel of fresh produce harvested helps fill an empty plate. But it also fills a gap that too many families in our region feel deeply.
